Tragically, many of them do not survive due to the severe shortage of available organs. According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), more than100,000 individuals are currently on the transplant waiting list in the United States alone, with an average of 17 people dying each day because an organ was not available in time (Israni et al.,2025). Despite medical advancements that have improved transplantation procedures, the demand for organ donors continues to outpace the supply, making this a dire public health issue.
